5 Questions to reflect on 2024 & embrace the New Year

As the year draws to a close, reflection offers a powerful way to help process growth, celebrate wins, and learn from challenges. Taking time to look back thoughtfully can set a positive tone for the new year. Here are five reflective questions to help you evaluate your journey through 2024, celebrate your accomplishments, and move forward with purpose into 2025.

1. What were my most meaningful moments in 2024?

Think about the events, conversations, or milestones that stood out. These moments could be big achievements like landing a new job or smaller but equally meaningful instances like a heart-to-heart with a loved one. Reflecting on these moments helps highlight what truly matters to you and brings gratitude to the forefront. Remember it’s about your moments and not the expectations of others.

Tip: Write down at least three meaningful moments and why they were significant. Look for patterns that reveal your values or priorities.

2. What challenges did I overcome, and what did I learn from them?

Challenges often bring growth, even if they’re uncomfortable at the time. Reflecting on obstacles you faced this year—and how you navigated them—can help you appreciate your resilience. This process helps uncover valuable lessons that can guide you in the future. When faced with a challenging situation I always ask myself “what am I supposed to be learning?” - “what is the lesson?”.

Prompt: Consider framing your reflection as a story. Start with the challenge, then describe your actions and the outcome. What strengths did you uncover or develop?

3. In what ways did I grow personally or professionally?

Growth isn’t always linear or obvious. Perhaps you developed a new skill, deepened a relationship, or changed your perspective on something important. Reflecting on areas where you’ve grown provides a sense of accomplishment and shows you are moving forward, even in the smallest of ways.

Reflection idea: Break this down into categories like skills, relationships, health, and mindset. What’s one area where you’re proud of your progress?

4. What brought me joy this year?

Joy often gets overshadowed by productivity or problem-solving, but for me it’s so important. Taking stock of what made you genuinely happy in 2024 can help you prioritise activities, relationships, or habits that align with your well-being. Finding moments of joy in your daily life ultimately supports your health and happiness. It also has a ripple effect on others. So use this to spread joy and happiness.

Challenge: List your sources of joy and ask yourself how you can bring more of them into your life in 2025. Is there a hobby, routine, or connection you’d like to nurture?

5. What do I want to carry forward into 2025?

As you look ahead, think about what’s worth continuing. Maybe it’s a practice, like journaling, or a mindset, like approaching life with curiosity. Carrying these forward ensures you’re building on your progress and creating a foundation for success in the new year.

Action step: Write down one or two habits, practices, or attitudes you want to prioritise in 2025. How will you integrate them into your routine?

Reflecting on 2024 isn’t just about looking back; it’s about recognising how far you’ve come and aligning with where you want to go. These five questions can help guide you through a thoughtful review of the year, helping you appreciate the journey and step into 2025 with more clarity and purpose.

Take some time to write out your answers or discuss them with someone close to you. Reflection isn’t just a solo act—sharing your insights can deepen your understanding and strengthen your connections. Here’s to closing out 2024 with gratitude and entering 2025 with intention!
